The Little Horses (žirgeliai in Lithuanian) hat features both representational and symbolic motifs. Horses were dearly loved in Lithuania, and in general were associated with the harvest or war. Today we use the word crossroads metaphorically to indicate a critical point in a person’s life where significant decisions need to be made. In the past, actual crossroads were considered liminal spaces where the physical world met with the supernatural.

In Latvia, the morning star was named Auseklis. In Baltic textiles, he, like the Lithuanian Aušrinė, was also symbolized by an eight-pointed star.
